2009 Day of Caring Projects

**Pitt faculty and staff have come forward to volunteer for the 2009 Day of Caring so early and in such numbers that all projects are now filled.  Thank you for your generosity of time and effort.**

Please select four community projects that you'd like to participate in during the 2009 Day of Caring, Wednesday, September 16, 2009.

All projects will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at locations listed below.

OAKLAND PREPARES FOR THE G-20 - FULL

Under the sponsorship of the Oakland Business Improvement District and the Oakland Transportation Management Association volunteers will carry-out a variety of community beautification tasks designed to get Central Oakland ready as Pittsburgh hosts the world just a week later.

SENIOR HOME SAFETY - FULL

Working with Oakland Planning & Development Corporation, we will assist with safety evaluation and improvements to the homes of South Oakland senior citizens. This project is in cooperation with Pitt’s Equipoise.

TRANSITIONAL AND EMERGENCY HOUSING - FULL

Pitt Volunteers will assist Community Human Services in the creating transitional and emergency housing in South Oakland. We will work on interior renovation of a building on Lawn Street. Facilities Management staff will supply assistance and supervision.

THE GREENING OF THE HILL - FULL

Volunteers will assist in the greening of one of our largest City neighborhoods adjacent to campus. Working in collaboration with such national organizations as the Sierra Club, as well as Hill House Neighborhood Development we will install perennial beds and make other improvements to Cliff Side Park. Facilities Management staff will supply assistance and supervision.

CREATING AN OAKLAND FOOD PANTRY - FULL

We will assist Community Human Services and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in creating a food pantry for the residents an the working poor of Oakland. Tasks will involve interior fix-up and clean-up work, as well as organization and stocking.

PEOPLE’S OAKLAND AND OAKLAND’S PEOPLE - FULL

Volunteers will work along side People’s Oakland members on a variety of interior projects. During and following lunch volunteers will have a chance to talk in an organized and directed setting with the members of People’s Oakland about our jobs and careers at the University.

SCHENLEY PARK TREE PLANTING - FULL

Our volunteers will work in small groups under the supervision of park stewards doing native tree plantings in Oakland. The park stewards will lecture on the importance of what we are doing and supplying horticultural information as we work.

FAMILY HOUSE FIX-IT DAY - FULL

Pitt employees will assist with a variety of fix-up tasks as well as spending time with client families at lunch at the Family House in Oakland. Family House provides lodging for out-of-towners accompanying patients being treated at local hospitals.

BUILDING JOB SKILLS - FULL

Volunteers will work with several projects at Pittsburgh Community Services at the Hill House Community Center that assist residents with acquiring new job-related skills. This project is in cooperation with Pitt’s Equipoise.

GLOBAL LINKS MEDICAL SUPPLIES - FULL

Pitt Volunteers will be working at Global Links, an effective international aid organization that collects and repackages surplus medical supplies for distribution to needy clinics locally and worldwide. Work is at their Point Breeze location.

STEPHEN FOSTER COMMUNITY CENTER - FULL

Pitt Volunteers will travel to this multi-purpose community center that serves its Lawrenceville neighborhood with programs for both young people and the elderly. We will do interior painting.

FOOD SORTING AND PACKING - FULL

As part of our ongoing support of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, volunteers will be sorting and packing bulk foods for distribution to needy families through out our region. We will spend the day at their headquarters and warehouse in Duquesne, Pa.
